Car sales in India in recent years have shown a spike in the SUV and pick-up market, so it’s perhaps not a surprising decision on Isuzu’s part. Producing on-site will give Isuzu preferential access to more than a billion consumers, and negotiations with the government of Andhra Pradresh are said to be proceeding apace. The Economic Times reported that an announcement is expected in Hyderabad in early March of a new plant to be built on a greenfield site in Sri City at a cost of 1,000 core. Production of at least 50,000 vehicles a year will be expected to start in 2015, but the sighting of the D Max would suggest Isuzu has already made agreements to share facilities with Indian manufacturer Hindustan Motors in Chennai, not far from Sri City.

Logistics aside, Isuzu’s concern in such an ambitious venture will naturally be choosing the right model to go with. On this score the D Max seems a safe bet. The 3.0 litre diesel engine pick-up has an impressive reputation, only increased by the new model brought out last year. The Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 represents all that’s terrible and all that’s exciting about the modern era of smartphones. The Note however was quite a hit with the business class users as it came off as a device that managed to offer substantial speed with its 1.4GHz Dual Core and a large enough display to get work done on the fly.

The screen has a resolution of 1280×800 pixels (which puts it in the same corner as Android tablets such as the Motorola Xoom, the Acer Iconia Tab and the Lenovo Ideapad K1) and boasts of Pentile Super AMOLED technology (that trades overall quality for more power efficiency and pixel density). The Note has 16GB of internal storage and supports up to 32GB of microSD storage although it doesn’t come with a card in the bundle.

The Samsung Galaxy Note is a huge device and as a result, whether you would want to buy it really depends on whether you are able to look beyond its size and bulk (although at about 180g, it’s not really very heavy). The Note also features plenty of video codecs built in to handle all format runs on Android Gingerbread with an ICS update on the horizon. The Samsung S-Pen or Smart Pen stylus can also be quite handy for both work and play or just jotting down notes.

2. Sony Xperia S

Sony’s latest high-end Smartphone in their Xperia range was only recently launched for India and is the first device launched under the Sony branding (minus the Ericsson). It has a 5 Megapixel camera 2592 x 1536 Pixels resolution with autofocus, dual LED flash and Geo-tagging, Touch Focus. Secondary Camera VGA, 0.3 Megapixel, 640×480 Pixels resolution. Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is a 2G network can access Quad-band GSM support of GSM 850/900/1800/1900. Dual-band 3G that is HSDPA 900/2100/.

It’s equipped with a 1.5GHz Dual Core processor and comes loaded with Sony’s Bravia Mobile Engine to enhance your visual experience.This is also the very first Android powered device to come with a 12 megapixel camera. The camera settings include 3D panorama Sweep and geotagging amongst others. The unique transparent strip at the bottom of the handset also adds a bit of class and sex appeal to the overall look and feel of the handset that’s quite robust in design as it is.

3. Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The Galaxy Nexus was the first smartphone in the U.S. to feature the latest version of Android, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich. It features a 4.65-inchHD Super AMOLED display and runs a 1.2-GHz dual-core processor. The Galaxy Nexus also boasts NFC, so users can tap into Google Wallet, as well as tighter integration with Google Voice, letting you use your main phone number as a Google Voice number.

It’s the only phone running Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), and that’s the future. In many ways, this is the ultimate early adopter phone. The phone itself isn’t perfect; typically, Nexus phones aren’t the best hardware on the market. But the software takes a major leap forward, with everything from a better Gmail experience to a faster browser and the ability to put folders on your home screens.

This is physically the biggest phone I’ve seen recently, measuring 5.3 by 2.7 by 0.4 with a sprawling 4.65-inch, 1,280-by-720 Super AMOLED screen. The display is too big for people with smaller thumbs to use one-handed. The Galaxy Nexus connects to Verizon’s 3G CDMA EVDO Rev A and 4G LTE networks, as well as to Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0. I got excellent speeds on the 4G LTE network, consistently better than the Droid

RAZR: Downloads ranged from 5.2Mbps up to a stunning 20.7Mbps, and uploads ranged from 4Mbps to 9.5Mbps. You can share your connection with up to 10 devices as a Wi-Fi hotspot, so it’s great that ICS now includes an easy-to-read settings pane showing your moment-by-moment and app-by-app data usage.

4. HTC One X (AT&T)

The HTC One X features a beautiful, high-definition, 4.7-inch display, with 1280-by-720-pixel (720p) resolution. Under the hood, the HTC One X is just as impressive. It features Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon S4 CPU, a 1.5-GHz dual-core chip with faster graphics and improved power efficiency. There’s also 1GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and the usual compliment of GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth radios.

It’s very well built, with top-quality plastic around the back and sides with a nicely textured matte finish. I did miss the gradient anodized aluminum housing on the HTC One S, though. A prominent silver ring surrounds the camera lens on the back, and protrudes slightly, just enough that the phone tilts a bit when sitting flat on a table.

Calls sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset, although voice dialing doesn’t work over Bluetooth, which is a pesky and unnecessary limitation. The speakerphone got very loud, but sounded tinny; at least it didn’t distort heavily. Battery life was solid, at 9 hours and 9 minutes of talk time while connected to LTE.

HTC adds a Car Mode, which displays a beautiful landscape home screen with large icons for easy access while behind the wheel. This includes the free Google Maps Navigation, as well as icons for making calls, streaming Internet radio, and calling up music tracks stored on the phone.

5. Motorola Droid RAZR

The top Android smartphone you can buy today, the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx combines the best materials, Razr Maxx has the longest Talk time of any Verizon Wireless phone we’ve ever tested, along with the longest video playback time and the longest 4G streaming time. A truly gigantic battery. What you get is a smartphone that’s ready to be used to the max.

Tests run over the past few days, the Razr Maxx checked in with 16 hours, 45 minutes of continuous 3G talk time; 14 hours, 15 minutes of playing a locally stored video with the screen at maximum brightness and one email account attached; and 6 hours, 57 minutes of continually streaming audio over a 4G LTE connection. Razr Maxx is also one of the most expensive smartphones on the market.

The Droid Razr Maxx is thicker than the original Motorola Droid Razr, but considering how slim the Razr was, that isn’t a hardship. The phone is 5.2 by 2.7 by .35 inches (HWD), as compared to .28 inches depth on the older phone; basically, the whole handset is now as thick as the camera “bump” up top, smoothing the body out.

More importantly, like the Razr this is an extremely well-built phone—rock solid, with a water-resistant back, a steel core, and a Gorilla Glass display. The back panel has a black and gray pattern and feels slightly grippy; the front resists even greasy fingerprints. A door on the side panel hides the SIM and MicroSD card slots, and the phone comes with a 16GB card as well as an additional 16GB of internal storage.

The Droid Razr is superior for many reasons including better battery life, better physical materials, and better call quality and radio reception, for instance. That all outweighs the OS downgrade, although we wish we didn’t have to choose between the best hardware and the most current OS.

Other features include 4.03-inch display with 1024 x 600 resolution (295 PPI), 8 megapixel rear camera with flash, 10fps burst mode and 1080p video recording, 1.3 megapixel front camera, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage space, HSPA+ connectivity up to 21Mbps, HDMI out and NFC built-in. Unfortunately, the phone will be sold with Android 2.3 Gingerbread at launch, although an Android 4.0 update is in works. NFC and HDMI connectivityfeature on the phone. Battery life is rated at 5 hours of 3G browsing , 45 hours of audio playback and 8 hours of talktime. It’s running on Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread and an update to ICS has been promised.
