India’s Android Tablet Aakash – Review

The much awaited India’s ultra low cost Aakash tablet is finally launched. In association with Ministry of Infornmation & Technology (India), Datawind launches Ubislate 7 in India as Aakash. Aakash Tablet is set to bridge the big India DIGITAL DIVIDE. Its main objective is to provide students of India, especially in its countryside, a cheap alternative to PC. Through Aakash tablet, students in India would have access to good quality study content like video lectures, e-books etc.

Aakash tablet offers a web delivery platform that enables quality and interactive knowledge over the internet. The tablet is a computing device that is low in cost but rich in features. The tablet is also integrated with social networking applications like facebook, twitter and with email.

If analyze it deep, there are some negative points of it as well. The tablet screen, which is pressure sensitive, responds rather slowly to gestures. It’s certainly not as dazzling as the high-end tablets but that can be expected by its price. Browsing Internet and running the apps, one could easily notice that the response time is also quite slow. Scrolling, for instance, is a swipe-and-wait affair. A goofy plastic cover protects the screen, slowing down the touch response considerably.

Overall impression that this tablet gives us that it is built for performance. Many of those likely to use or own the the Aakash Tablet will never have used a desktop computer, and it’s possible that they never will.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus – A Range of Positives

The Galaxy Nexus has been released as a phone that offers the best of Samsung and Google – a marriage of excellent hardware and excellent software. The device looks quite similar to the Nexus of old, though has many of the Samsung tweaks that make a phone a solid and undisputedly nice piece of work. While the hardware is fairly impressive, not all areas are the most cutting edge. What is really the standout feature of the Galaxy Nexus is the new Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android.

Samsung has included the same 1.2Gz chip in the Galaxy Nexus that it has in the Galaxy S2 – meaning it is a slouch in no way. The phone is very fast and also very capable and, with 1GB RAM, is better suited for multitasking and for slightly more ambitious use than devices like the iPhone 4S. With less hype surrounding it, Galaxy Nexus contracts are also available for a much more affordable price than those for Apple’s current flagship phone.

The coming of Android Ice Cream Sandwich also added a certain element of smoothness to the interface and it really manages to impress even the most experienced Android users. The new Ice Cream Sandwich brings a number of nice additions to Android. The most technologically impressive improvement comes with the face recognition software to unlock the phone – however it is tweaks to the notifications bar and in other little areas that make it all the more user friendly. The Galaxy Nexus really benefits from this and Google has thought of a number of things to make the phone all the more user friendly and continue on the ground it made with Android Gingerbread.

The screen on the phone is also very impressive and at 4.65 inches in width it is by no means a small screen. This Super AMOLED display offers all that is needed for amazing images and for browsing or for watching footage it is one of the best screens available from any manufacturer. Its ability to pick up colours and the smooth movement involved in the phone make it a wonderful sight. Samsung have not just increased the screen size but also the resolution, with the Galaxy Nexus being the first phone to come with a 720p screen resolution.

The phone itself impresses in the looks department and it is quite slim at 8.8mm and also feels a lot smaller than you would imagine it to be because of the rounded edges on the phone. In fact we found little problem fitting it into trouser or coat pockets and though it seems large it doesn’t feel much larger than many of the 4.3inch phones out there – which obviously works in its favour.

We must say we liked the Galaxy Nexus and can see Samsung doing quite well with this eagerly anticipated phone due to the mixture of power, innovation and the introduction of the excellent game-changing Ice Cream Sandwich. If there is one mobile phone contract that you should look into buying this year – it is for the Galaxy Nexus.

India’s Cellphone Demand to Reach 350m Units by 2020: Report

Demand for cellphones in India, is projected to increase up to 350 million units by 2020 in contrast to an predicted 130 million units in 2011, as per an Enrst & Young report in collaboration with FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry). India has been rated as the world’s 2nd largest wireless (or cellphone) market after China. This report projects that 505 million handsets will be manufactured in India by 2020. It recommends that government should establish manufacturing hubs for machinery and components that go into making cellphones. Currently, companies such as Samsung and Nokia are assembling some of their phones in India but their components are still being imported from China. This report also has statistics about the average selling price (ASP) of phones in India in 2010, which was Rs 2,300 and is estimated to rise up to Rs 2,950 by 2020.

Windows Phone 7 based Nokia Phone Coming March 8 – Video Announcement

The Windows Phone 7 platform has a heap of potential but still feels like a work-in-progress project. To fix features and as well as to add them, Microsoft will liberate an update sometime in March. The fresh update would consist of new features such as Internet Explorer 9 and multitasking. Somewhat critical missing features such as copy-paste will also be added to the platform. The platform will also support CDMA, so Microsoft can expand into more markets.

Microsoft has been in the news for their new partnership with Nokia. With the two giants working together, Microsoft cannot pay for to be the weak link. Steve Ballmer showed off the new Windows Phone 7 update along with a revelation of the Internet Explorer 9 browser on it beating Safari on the Apple iPhone 4. There weren’t too many other things mentioned about the new update. That’s not a good thing allowing for that the new platform has a long way to go and critics might have quite a few things to say about it. The event even had Nokia CEO Stephen Elop come on stage and mention why the partnership with Microsoft was a move in the right direction.

With so little being added and Nokia Windows 7 phones coming soon, we’re hoping Microsoft will get its act together in time.

Motorola Glam – Dual Sim Android Phones in India

Motorola planning to launch first dual-sim Android phone in India next week. Dubbed as Milestone XT800, is actually a renamed Motorola Glam XT800.

The Glam has one GSM and one CDMA slot, so users have some flexibility in terms of choices for phone and data functions. The 3.7-inch (854×480) touch screen phone also has an HDMI-out port, GPS and a 5 megapixel camera. Bluetooth, Wi-fi, 3G, EDGE and GPRS round up the connectivity options for the phone which is supposedly coming pre-loaded with Android 2.2 Froyo. It powered with TI OMAP3430 550 Mhz processor, 256 MB RAM. It also enables users to view and edit documents in popular formats including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF and Zip. The handset has built-in GPS satellite navigation using Google Maps, which helps the owner find their current location and chart routes to various destinations quickly and accurately.

Samsung Galaxy Suit S5670 and Galaxy Ace S5830 – Hands On

Here are two leaked pictures of the Samsung Galaxy Suit S5670 and Galaxy Ace S5830.

The New Galaxy Suit S5670 will be running on the same plat form Android 2.2 OS and expected to be a mid-range Smart phone, further details about this device is not available. Its model number and looks suggest mid-range functionality, so it might be the I5500 Galaxy 5 successor.

Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 was initially known as Galaxy Mini, expected to be running on Android 2.2 Froyo and features 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and an HVGA (480 x 320 pixels) touchscreen display, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0.

Both the Galaxy Ace and the Galaxy Suit should be officially unveiled by Samsung at MWC 2011 next month, alongside the Galaxy Mini S5570 and the Galaxy S2.

LG Revolution 4G LTE Hands-On Verizon

The LG Revolution is a new 4G LTE handset for Verizon Wireless that was launched today at the carrier’s press event at CES 2011 in Las Vegas.

LG Revolution sports 4.3 inch capacitive touchscreen display, 5MP autofocus camera, front facing camera, HD video recording, 16GB of internal memory and up to 32GB of expandable memory. LG Revolution also features Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi, DLNA, HDMI, DivX support and mobile hotspot for share 4G connection with up to 8 WiFi-capable devices.

Verizon Wireless, a provider of 4G and 3G network, has launched 4G LTE network suite of 10 consumer-oriented devices that got stage time include:

The LG Revolution, LG’s first 4G smartphone. The Revolution has HD support for streaming, playing, and recording video, a 4.3-inch touch screen; Android 2.2; video telephony support with front-facing camera and mobile hot-spot capability to share a 4G connection with up to eight Wi-Fi-enabled devices.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Debut at CES 2011 – A BRAVIA Phone

Sony Ericsson has declared that it will unveil the new Xperia series handsets at the Consumer Electronic Show 2011, a new smartphone named Xperia arc that runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Xperia arc has a slightly arched back panel and is 8.7mm thin at its slimmest part. Sporting massive 4.2-inch display Xperia Arc would run Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread version.
Lots of praise for a start, right? It’s time to get into the details.

Xperia arc has a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapgradon processor that will make Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread update with SE Timescape UI run zippier. There are also a bunch of Google Android Apps like Maps with Street View, Talk, Latitude, and more. At the back panel, Sony Ericsson has added 8.1-megapixel camera with Sony Exmor R for mobile CMOS sensor that will allow you to shoot high-quality photos even in low light environments. This camera offers up to 2.46x smart zoom, has f/2.4 Aperture, Flash/LED, Face Detection, Geo-tagging, Image stabilization, Noise suppression, Touch focus, Touch Capture and Video Light. Internal phone memory is a mere 512MB but has an 8GB microSD card bundled. You can add up to 32GB microSD card.

The smartphone can be used for TV out though built in HDMI port. The XPERIA ARC Smartphone is integrated with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB support and loads of applications like Android Market Client, Google Search widget, and other major Google services.

Xperia arc would be available in Midnight Blue and Misty Silver colors. At this moment, there’s no word on pricing but it can be expected to be somewhat close to that of Xperia X10 when it was launched last year. However, this phone would be made available worldwide in this first quarter. So out of the new Xperia family phones, we already know the Xperia arc, Xperia Play and X10 Mini successors.

Sprint reveal HTC EVO Shift 4G and new 3G/4G MiFi

Sprint’s highly-awaited plans released this weekend the HTC EVO Shift 4G, powered by Android 2.2 OS with HTC Sense UI and Qualcomm MSM7630 800MHz processor. The big new addition is obviously the slide-out keyboard, a smart phone that uses the wireless carrier’s faster fourth-generation network.

The Shift has a 3.6-inch 800 x 480 LCD, Android 2.2 (with HTC Sense), and the same great 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7630 processor that’s in the G2 and myTouch 4G. Naturally there’s WiMAX 4g, in addition to EVDO Rev A., and HTC hopes to keep those radios alive with a 1500mAh battery. There’s a 5 megapixel camera around back, capable of 720p video, but oddly no front-facing camera.

The HTC Evo Shift will be available Jan. 9. It will cost $149.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and activation on a new two-year service contract.

Sprint also announced the launch of Novatel Wireless’ MiFi 3G/4G mobile hotspot device that provides wireless connectivity for up to five WiFi-enabled devices. The device will be available at all Sprint retail channels on Feb. 27 for $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate activation.

HTC HD7 – India’s First Superb Hardware Windows 7 Phone

HTC has launched India’s first Windows Phone 7 namely HTC HD7 with partnership with Bharti Airtel in India. HTC HD7 is powered by 1GHz processor. The screen that just keeps on going meets the OS that refuses to fit on a single display. Yes, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7, like Windows Mobile 6.5 and Android. The HTC HD7 (T-Mobile) has the specs of a high-end phone: The HD7 is a great device for watching movies or browsing the Web, which are becoming the norm for high-end phones.

Display

The HD7 isn’t shy about proclaiming itself an entertainment machine and its design reflects these aspirations. A slight tilt off-axis and colors get shimmery and washed out—it’s particularly noticeable with Windows Phone’s in-your-face primary colors. The hardware buttons on the side are smoother, too, giving it an overall sleeker appearance. Like the HTC EVO 4G (on Sprint also with a 4.3-inch display), measuring 4.8 by 2.7 by 0.4 inches thick and weighing 5.7 ounces the HD7 has a kickstand for tabletop video-watching. The kickstand pulls out from the camera’s lens. Also houses a volume rocker, a two-stage camera button, and your standard-issue power/lock combo button. If you’ve got large jeans pockets, you should be fine. Ladies, forget about carrying this thing in your pocket.

Camera

The HTC HD7 sports a 5-megapixel shooter with a dual-LED flash. All WP 7 phones also must have a dedicated camera key, the camera app from a locked screen (by holding down the shutter button). We could frankly take it or leave it, there’s a character limit on each note so if you’re a wordy sort of missive writer, it’ll immediately discourage use, while its stylized elements feel somewhat forced and unnecessary.

Now the Photo Enhancer, image post-processing app doesn’t really have any pretensions for the high office of actually enhancing your photos. Oh, sure enough, it has one preset for auto-correcting and enhancing your pics, but it’s real title might be something closer to Photo Fiddler. It comes with a bunch of different after-effects you can apply to generate particular artistic conceits atop your images — from making them look like monochromatic classic, to intentionally over-exposing them, to giving them warm or cold color casts with 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS, Dolby Mobile, SRS surround and 1230mAh battery. Honestly, it was a lot more fun than we expected it to be and its basic but varied functionality seems a perfect fit for the device it’s riding on.

HTC HD7 will be available for Rs. 29990. Airtel customers get a special data pack of 2GB per month for 6 months at Rs 300 extra.

Conclusion

The HD7 is a high-quality phone, but without a front-facing camera or 4G data speeds, it can’t compete with the T-Mobile myTouch 4G, Apple iPhone 4, HTC EVO 4G, or Samsung Epic 4G. If you’re a T-Mobile customer longing for a Windows Phone 7, however, the HTC HD7 is a nice introduction to the platform and a great entertainment phone. Make sure you give Windows Phone 7 a test run, however, before purchasing. It has a few quirks as well as a few missing features, like copy/paste and Flash support.

Google Nexus S will be soon available in India for Rs. 24,000 through infibeam. The Nexus S will be available for purchase “online and in-store from all Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores,” either unlocked or with a T-Mobile plan. Windows Phone 7 Second Update Arriving February 2011?

Microsoft is preparing a Windows Phone 7 second update to be made available in February 2011 even before the first has been released completely. The second update is expected to be unveiled by Microsoft at the Mobile World Congress in February 2011.

If this information is correct the new update will come up with improved multitasking support, with in-app downloads and broader customization options for end users. However the second larger update according to developers will bring with it some great new features, improving the Windows Phone 7 OS in 2011 considerably.
