Sony has awarded two companies contracts for shipment of the PS3 Slim Edition which will start in July.

According to the news, the companies that won the contracts are Hon Hai and Foxconn with Hon Hai got the majority. All we know for right now is that the PS3 Slim edition will be slimmer and lighter. But it could be out by July or August.

After the great success of Need For Speed “Underground” and “Hot Pursuit” EA Games was showing off the Need For Speed Shift at the E3 2009. Need for Speed Shift was developed by Slightly Mad Studios, it is a next-generation racing simulator built by racers for racers thus delivering an authentic and immersive driving experience, replicating the true feeling of racing high-end performance cars.

Need for Speed will definitely be a hit because of there exciting features such as a realistic first-person cockpit view camera and an all-new crash mechanic. Right now PC Game is saying it is “a completely real driving experience” and JoyPad is saying that “Graphically, the game looks superb“.

Microsoft sold 28 million Xbox 360 video game console units in 2008, expanding the Xbox’s lead over rival Sony Corp’s PlayStation 3 console in worldwide unit sales, the company said on Monday.

Xbox 360 product management director Aaron Greenberg said 2008 “was our biggest year ever in Xbox history” despite this global economy that’s battered U.S. retailers this past holiday season.

Rising unemployment has dented U.S. consumers’ purchasing power & most retailers have posted dismal sales results in recent months.

Despite problems by some publishers, the video game industry overall has bucked the trend as market researcher NPD said video games sales rose 10% and totaled $2.91 billion in November, proving consumers were still spending on video games at the beginning of the holiday season despite the sour economy.

Online consumer spending on Microsoft’s Xbox Live online service increased 84% year-over-year and members of the Xbox Live community rose to over 17 million members in the year 2008, the company said. Consumers have spent over $1 billion on Microsoft’s Xbox Live online service since its launch for the 360 in 2005, according the Microsoft.

Greenberg noted “the $199 price point (of the Xbox 360) was really critical to our success this holiday.” Microsoft cut the U.S. price of its entry-level console in September to $199, or $50 below Nintendo Co Ltd’s Wii console.

Xbox Live Won’t Crash Again This Christmas

With Microsoft sporting a cheaper console and the need to upgrade all new Xbox 360s to the New Xbox Experience come Christmas morning, it appears that a repeat of last year’s Live crash is about to happen.

Not so, says Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360.

We’ve built a lot of infrastructure, a lot of behind the curtain no one sees, he said. This is something that Microsoft is good at.

We are well prepared for the type of growth we expect this holiday.”

And if things do go sideways, Greenberg assures that Microsoft will be prepared.

We’ll have people standing by, more people on hand than we’ve ever had before,

he said. “Knock on wood we will hopefully not have any issues.”

Korea will invest 350 billion in gaming industry by 2012

The South Korean government will invest 350 billion won in the computer game industry by 2012.

In a meeting Wednesday about plans to develop the game industry in the country, Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Yu In-chon said they country’s game industry hit a billion-dollar export goal this year.

The minister plans to kick start 60 projects in the country, including a $200 billion game fund, to help South Korea become one of the largest gave developers in the world. He’s looking at you Japan and the U.S.

This has really a good news for Korean-based developer NC Soft.

GameLoft has just released Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes for the iPhone, “a 3rd person shooter where you control your character across various missions.”

Shooting involves hitting a button on the bottom right, and special weapons (such as grenades) appear on the top right. Gameloft has added a number of additional special modes/features that keep things interesting.

The Sonic Unleashed game “introduces two new features: the ‘Speed Drift’ and the ‘Quick Step’.

Speed Drifting is similar to drifting in racing games, allowing players to slide around corners at high speeds, while Quick Stepping is a sidestepping maneuver allowing Sonic to avoid enemies with quick steps to either side.”

The game combines the feel of 2D side-scrolling that fans of the Sonic series love, with sharp 3D graphics, and throws in an over the back third-person perspective reminiscent of FPS gameplay for good measure. And just as in earlier games, as players race through and explore the expansive world before them, using auto lock to hone in on enemies and areas of interest, they will rely on the power they gain from the rings they collect for a variety of things, but with the new twist of Sonic’s split personality, things are a little bit different.

In Prince of Persia, “you’re free to tackle pretty much any area as you choose and Ubisoft has provided a handy device to ease navigation of the vast world.”

It’s simply a case of selecting your destination on the map (incidentally, it’s possible to teleport between cleansed Healing Grounds) then following Elika’s magic vapour trail – not totally dissimilar to Fable 2′s innovative breadcrumb trail, in fact.

Netflix- New Xbox Experience launches, looks great

Several folks, may be you as well, waited up until 2 AM PST tonight to download the new Xbox Experience update for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 game console. It arrived on time and after a quick download was good to go. Too bad its Netflix integration wasn’t.

After trying about 10 different activation codes to sync Netflix account with Xbox and getting errors for each one, decided to consult the Internet. Twitter is littered with users having the exact same problem. It appears that no one has been able to activate the Netflix “Watch Instantly” function on the Xbox for the past few hours.

While the new Xbox Dashboard looks great, I really only care about the Netflix function. I would not have waited up for a user interface update and some cute avatars. But alas, it isn’t working. Perhaps I really should have signed up early and downloaded the update last night, because all indications are from those people that Netflix is working and looking great.
