After surveying 35,000 people around the world, researchers came to a conclusion: Gadgets make people happy.Researcher Paul Flatters of Trajectory Partnership explains:

Whether young or old, we’re all social beings, we all have a need for the things IT access facilitates.

He continued to add that:

Ownership of technology is a status symbol in many cultures…having a computer is considered synonymous with a good education worldwide.

So it’s not a matter of gadgets themselves actually making us happy, but rather the things they represent. The loved ones we maintain contact with and our life situations.

Sony launched another new VAIO notebook by launching the VAIO E series. The 15.5-inch notebook is having extremely customizable designs & colors like bright, neon colors like “Caribbean green” and “hibiscus pink”, brown and silver etc. and all this available today with specification of:

Core i3 processor
4GB RAM
500GB HDD
and a CD/DVD burner standard

Just for $800. We also hear that there are other options coming soon, including Core i5 and Blu-ray upgrades that will be available starting Feb 7th.

The only disappointing thing is 3.5 hours battery life but otherwise the Vaio E looks to be a reasonably priced OK.

Google reveal fresh look for Orkut

Orkut has revamped its look and added a crowd of new features as it tries to recover ground from one of its toughest competitor Facebook.

Google, which owns Orkut, believed the new look has a user interface, or homepage, which is faster and easier to use.

“With the new user interface (UI), the user does not have to visit each page for viewing videos, or say posting scraps.

Get to see all updates and respond to friends from the homepage itself. It also allows faster uploading of photos and has features like video chat, automatic face detection and a scroll down menu for viewing all friends on the same page.

India is the second leading market for Orkut after Brazil. “We have about 80-100 million users globally“

Announced today, the official pricing of Windows 7 is as follows:

Retail

Home Premium $199.99

Professional $299.99

Ultimate $319.99

Upgrade Packages

n other words, $120, $200, and $220 respectively. Before you get excited about the lower prices (when compared to Vista), remember that only 1% actually buy retail OS copies. The rest download bootleg copies from torrent sites get the OS when they buy a new computer.

Still, it’s great seeing Microsoft slashing their flagship product prices a bit. Maybe we’ll see less people call the company “M$” on online forums.

Some bad news for Windows XP users though: Windows 7 will insist on a clean install, allowing no upgrades. Any Windows 7 upgrade package will work with XP though, checking first if the XP installation is legit before installing itself onto the same partition as XP.

One more thing to keep in mind: upgrading to Windows 7 from a higher edition of Vista will also require a clean install, as in the case of a Vista Ultimate user wanting to install Winows 7 Home Premium.

The ever-watchful eye of the European Union, Microsoft’s announce its Euro version of Windows 7, warmly and officially dubbed Windows 7 E, which will not come with Internet Explorer, and any other browser for that material.

The whole story is, OEMs will be provided free copies of IE8 to pack themselves instead of other browser options, and consumers can accept up their own copies via CD, FTP, or retail channels. The undoubtedly in response to the antitrust cases the EU keeps throwing Microsoft’s way, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it end up on almost every European computer sold, we do surprise if this will at all speed up IE’s already quickly diminishing share in the war of web browsers.

Hope that it’ll come in India soon…….

People fell hassle while charging their mobile phones, particularly when they are going somewhere. Nokia think it has the solution:

A phone that charges itself. In new charging system Nokia working on allows a phone to charge itself by ambient radiowaves. The waves are all around us through TVs, radios and mobile phones themselves. The power harvested from these waves is enough to keep a phone powered in standby mode for an indefinite period.

The Oyster cards used by commuters in London apply a similar principle but harvest their power from the readers they are swiped through. Nokia’s model harvests it right from the air.

System works via a wide band antenna and two simple circuits. They pick up frequencies ranging from 500 megahertz to 10 gigahertz and convert those waves into electrical current. So far they have been able to harvest up to 5 millliwatts and wish to get at least 20, which is enough to keep a phone in standby mode.

Don’t run to store immediately as these charging system are not expected to be on the market for another 3-5 years.

Google developed an algorithm that notify them which employees are most likely to quit. That’s really interesting as-well-as fearful for employees.

What it does: Actually it’s a formula designed by Google team to let a machine essentially wriggle around inside your head to dig out your true intentions obviously regarding job — intentions you might not even realize you have yet—to reveal them to the company bean counters, who are basically machines themselves. Who can then take the Pre-Crime approach and shit you before you quit—if you were really going to quit at all.

Google developed this algorithm in response to its best employees bailing, so presumably at least some of the unhappy people would be wooed, not written off.

Today, a computer knows if you’re going to quit. Next, a computer calculates if you should be hired at all. Which is only a few generations removed from determining if all people shouldn’t be fired, but like, permanently? Wow! Artificially intelligence is here…..

Yahoo New Homepage For Mobile

Yahoo has rolled out its mobile homepage on the mobile web, and as an iPhone application. The service, first introduced in February at Mobile World Congress, replaces its old Yahoo! Go product and ties together its various mobile offerings into one place including its search product, Onesearch, its social networking product, OneConnect and its content management product OnePlace.

Features:

It allows users to bring in outside applications—a big distinction from Yahoo Go, which only allowed in Yahoo products. Users can access Gmail or Hotmail, & not just Yahoo Mail.
The mobile web version is supported by more than 300 devices, or those capable of supporting HTML-enabled mobile browsers.
Both the web version & iPhone version are available in 8 countries, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Germany, France, India, Indonesia & the Philippines. (More country versions are expected to roll out over the next few months).

Yahoo plans to derive revenues from the product through display advertising, including both banners and rich media ads, which will allow users to send to a friend, locate a dealer, of click to call the advertiser directly, among other capabilities.

Facebook has announced it will roll out a newly designed homepage for its users in middle of next week. Gone is the Newsfeed, it will now be replaced with “Stream,“ which sends real time updates to your page, letting you in on what your friends are doing in real-time. The status update feature is now called “Publisher” and asks “What’s on your mind?”

All text, links, photos or videos entered are immediately published on your home page and those of your friends. There will be plenty of filters, allowing you to decide what types of content you want to see in your stream and from which friends.

Facebook is offering a sneak peek-just log into your account and you’ll see the announcement on your homepage with a link to the “tour.“ Is this sound really cool? Let us know…

Skype will integrate with Nokia Nseries

Skype with Nokia N-Series

Now, Skype will be pre-integrated in Nokia N-Series mobile phones, company announced in Mobile World Congress trade show, Barcelona.

The first model with this Skype feature will be available with Nokia N97 & will start commercially in June. The app will run on both Wi-Fi and on 3G. N-Series smartphones run on Symbian S60 operating system.

How you can communicate: The address-book of the phone will be connected to the Skype software to make users aware when their Skype contacts are online so they can make free voice calls or send SMS.

Users will also have the possibility to make phone calls from the integrated Skype to other cellphones or landline numbers. For this service, obviously they need to pay. With the increase in capabilities in cell phones, VoIP is becoming a viable option.

However, in this way, mobile phone bills can get expensive.

It was the news that skype will be ibuilt add-on software in Nokia mobiles however it’s official now that Skype will be coming to iPhones and iPod touches tomorrow i.e. Tuesday and to RIM BlackBerries in May.
