1. Samsung Galaxy Note

The Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 represents all that’s terrible and all that’s exciting about the modern era of smartphones. The Note however was quite a hit with the business class users as it came off as a device that managed to offer substantial speed with its 1.4GHz Dual Core and a large enough display to get work done on the fly.

The screen has a resolution of 1280×800 pixels (which puts it in the same corner as Android tablets such as the Motorola Xoom, the Acer Iconia Tab and the Lenovo Ideapad K1) and boasts of Pentile Super AMOLED technology (that trades overall quality for more power efficiency and pixel density). The Note has 16GB of internal storage and supports up to 32GB of microSD storage although it doesn’t come with a card in the bundle.

The Samsung Galaxy Note is a huge device and as a result, whether you would want to buy it really depends on whether you are able to look beyond its size and bulk (although at about 180g, it’s not really very heavy). The Note also features plenty of video codecs built in to handle all format runs on Android Gingerbread with an ICS update on the horizon. The Samsung S-Pen or Smart Pen stylus can also be quite handy for both work and play or just jotting down notes.

2. Sony Xperia S

Sony’s latest high-end Smartphone in their Xperia range was only recently launched for India and is the first device launched under the Sony branding (minus the Ericsson). It has a 5 Megapixel camera 2592 x 1536 Pixels resolution with autofocus, dual LED flash and Geo-tagging, Touch Focus. Secondary Camera VGA, 0.3 Megapixel, 640×480 Pixels resolution. Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is a 2G network can access Quad-band GSM support of GSM 850/900/1800/1900. Dual-band 3G that is HSDPA 900/2100/.

It’s equipped with a 1.5GHz Dual Core processor and comes loaded with Sony’s Bravia Mobile Engine to enhance your visual experience.This is also the very first Android powered device to come with a 12 megapixel camera. The camera settings include 3D panorama Sweep and geotagging amongst others. The unique transparent strip at the bottom of the handset also adds a bit of class and sex appeal to the overall look and feel of the handset that’s quite robust in design as it is.

The Galaxy Nexus was the first smartphone in the U.S. to feature the latest version of Android, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich. It features a 4.65-inchHD Super AMOLED display and runs a 1.2-GHz dual-core processor. The Galaxy Nexus also boasts NFC, so users can tap into Google Wallet, as well as tighter integration with Google Voice, letting you use your main phone number as a Google Voice number.

It’s the only phone running Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), and that’s the future. In many ways, this is the ultimate early adopter phone. The phone itself isn’t perfect; typically, Nexus phones aren’t the best hardware on the market. But the software takes a major leap forward, with everything from a better Gmail experience to a faster browser and the ability to put folders on your home screens.

This is physically the biggest phone I’ve seen recently, measuring 5.3 by 2.7 by 0.4 with a sprawling 4.65-inch, 1,280-by-720 Super AMOLED screen. The display is too big for people with smaller thumbs to use one-handed. The Galaxy Nexus connects to Verizon’s 3G CDMA EVDO Rev A and 4G LTE networks, as well as to Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0. There’s also 1GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and the usual compliment of GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth radios.

It’s very well built, with top-quality plastic around the back and sides with a nicely textured matte finish. I did miss the gradient anodized aluminum housing on the HTC One S, though. A prominent silver ring surrounds the camera lens on the back, and protrudes slightly, just enough that the phone tilts a bit when sitting flat on a table.

Calls sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset, although voice dialing doesn’t work over Bluetooth, which is a pesky and unnecessary limitation. The speakerphone got very loud, but sounded tinny; at least it didn’t distort heavily. Battery life was solid, at 9 hours and 9 minutes of talk time while connected to LTE.

HTC adds a Car Mode, which displays a beautiful landscape home screen with large icons for easy access while behind the wheel. This includes the free Google Maps Navigation, as well as icons for making calls, streaming Internet radio, and calling up music tracks stored on the phone.

5. Motorola Droid RAZR

The top Android smartphone you can buy today, the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx combines the best materials, Razr Maxx has the longest Talk time of any Verizon Wireless phone we’ve ever tested, along with the longest video playback time and the longest 4G streaming time. Tests run over the past few days, the Razr Maxx checked in with 16 hours, 45 minutes of continuous 3G talk time; 14 hours, 15 minutes of playing a locally stored video with the screen at maximum brightness and one email account attached; and 6 hours, 57 minutes of continually streaming audio over a 4G LTE connection. Razr Maxx is also one of the most expensive smartphones on the market.

The Droid Razr Maxx is thicker than the original Motorola Droid Razr, but considering how slim the Razr was, that isn’t a hardship. The phone is 5.2 by 2.7 by .35 inches (HWD), as compared to .28 inches depth on the older phone; basically, the whole handset is now as thick as the camera “bump” up top, smoothing the body out.

More importantly, like the Razr this is an extremely well-built phone—rock solid, with a water-resistant back, a steel core, and a Gorilla Glass display. The back panel has a black and gray pattern and feels slightly grippy; the front resists even greasy fingerprints. A door on the side panel hides the SIM and MicroSD card slots, and the phone comes with a 16GB card as well as an additional 16GB of internal storage.

The Droid Razr is superior for many reasons including better battery life, better physical materials, and better call quality and radio reception, for instance. That all outweighs the OS downgrade, although we wish we didn’t have to choose between the best hardware and the most current OS.

Last month, I wrote post about BSNL, Tata, Airtel & Reliance data card comparison and I got lots of comments from users so I decide to write about these vendors 3G technologies. In the market, Tata indicom photon 3G and Reliance Netconnect 3G, Airtel 3G and BSNL 3G are already available but which one is best to choose? Advertising campaign of various Internet service providers create confusion among customers to select a service. Hence the 3G internet was always most awaited in India because it just does not mean higher speed but also means revolution following which all around the world there would be more business transactions and more networking.

Reliance Netconnect Plus

Reliance Communications, India’s second-biggest mobile operator, launched its 3G services in India. The company said it would cover all its 13 zones by the end of March next year. RCom said that it was targeting a national footprint of 3G services through associations with other “like minded, quality 3G licensees” in the remaining nine telecoms zones during the course of next year. The company has launched 3G services in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta and Chandigarh.

Tata DoCoMo became the first private telecom firm to launch 3G mobile services in the country. The cost of this BSNL Micro SIM Kit will be Rs. 100 (Rs. 30 for the Micro sim and Rs. 70 for the 3G FRC Starter Plan).The BSNL Micro SIM card and 3G tariff plans for Apple Devices will be available from BSNL CSC in 3G Services area only.

Airtel 3G

Airtel had launched its 3G mobile services successfully bid for 13 zones including key cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad on a test basis. These cities account for 21 per cent of data traffic in the country. They are also most likely to have early adopters who are eagerly waiting to get their hand(set)s on 3G. Incidentally, the 13 circles also account for 68% of the telco’s revenue market share.

Airtel‘s 3G services, will usher in a new era of unique life style products. The offerings will be specifically targeted towards mobile broadband, given the enhanced speed and user experience which the 3G technology enables. The partners will play a catalyst role in enhancing the customer experience and the data usage habits in the country. In addition to being HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access) ready from launch, the 3G network will support world class user data speeds and enhanced mobile broadband user experience. High Speed Packet Access plus enables high peak user throughput which are multiple times higher than those supported in current 2G networks.

For reminding this is a Microsoft product because the Bing team keeps present something new for users. For example, in making Bing mobile, they added some mobile-specific features that will perk interest. The first is flight information, simply go to Bing and enter in flight number and you’ll be given gate info, departure and arrival info. That is super handy for mobile users that actually are mobile as they rush across the airport.

The NFL Feature is another new feature. Simply enter the name of your team or player and you’ll receive info on schedule, standings, and while the game is on you’ll get real-time stats. Super handy for data freaks and desire.

Not a big list but the Bing team will be adding support for more devices in the near future. Bing has added a special version for mobile touchscreen devices such as iPhone, T-Mobile G1 or Samsung Omnia.

Bing Mobile might even look good on a Windows Mobile device. Used the touchscreen version of Bing mobile to search for movies and compared to the same search on Google, the Bing Mobile search was much better looking, more complete and offered trailers without any extra work. It is worth checking out and with clear, short data you may find you don’t need a full featured browser on your mobile device. You will like it.

No comparison in Palm Pre, Nokia N97 & iPhone

June is really a big month for smartphones, in the past 1 week three decades biggest smartpones have launched. The Palm Pre, Apple iPhone 3GS and the Nokia N97! The Pre promises to revive Palm and put new life into the once very innovative maker, Apple unveil its fastest iTouch device ever with a major OS update and Nokia looks to create that punch in the touch screen segment with its N97.

Each one of them appeals to a different consumer and has its own strong points and ready buyers. N97, Pre and the iPhone all three have a different structure, different OS and a different market. So which one of these are you buying? Waiting for reviews comparing them? Have a look at each of them individually:

About Palm Pre: Palm ‘Pre’ is good attempt at the smartphones market, than the original iPhone or the iPhone 3G. iPhone has its own charm , it attracts people, gets usual attention and is wonderful gizmo. But the iPhone fails in some common things and that make a switch for some Blackberry user. The Pre packs in a physical QWERTY, brings in Multitasking and a great UI with multitouch. It’s the best of both worlds. Touch devices are buzzing and its a wonderful way to use any technology. Pre gets the best of touch and physical with an amazing OS/UI. , Pre is like Superman Returns.

About Nokia N97: Nokia N97 though a N-series, reminds as the communicator. An attempt made by Nokia to hit the touch market and indeed make it a iPhone killer. N97 packs in extreme features with 32GB+16GB storage, 5MP camera with DVD quality video recording and live widgets on the homescreen to present better web experience. At the similar time a sideways sliding QWERTY resembles the E90 design once open (though the mechanism is as seen in SE Xperia). Features alone did make a good gadget. Not a very little phone, bulky, studded with features and a sideways opening keyboard that is much more inconvenient to use (on the go) than a Blackberry, Palm Pre, E71 or even an iPhone. N97is a business phone made for media lovers. Mainly trying to stop the touch devices from robbery Nokia users on their side. Although the 5800 did extremely well on the price point, the N97 is Nokia’s attempt to serve the power users. All in all, the N97 retains the Nokia users … giving little competition to the iPhone.

N97: However this doesn’t fit here, as mention that Nokia makes the same error it made with the N7710. It was a full featured device in its time with FM, Touchscreen, handy design, nice camera etc. Though the processor was so slow that the usability was terrible. With 128MB ram and 434Mhz processor on a king size smartphone like the N97 makes wonder of the Symbian OS will handle the power users efficiently?

About iPhone 3GS: The 2 things redefined by Apple in the smartphones 1) Multitouch / full touch interface 2) The App Store. These were 2 masterstrokes in 2 years. Super hit, no doubt! We love the iPhone – amazing audio/video, mobile internet like never before, again a great swift OS+UI and the Apple touch in every turn. With Jail breaking and App Store apps its haven. Apple manage to present a unique powerphone feel with the iPhone, its own charm, own followers! Regular smartphone users would find it mighty difficult to adapt to Apple’s style. No Bluetooth transfer, no USB mass storage, no physical keypad/qwerty, no camera flash, proprietary chargers, cables etc. Though with an amazing OS v3.0, superb games, hardware bump, video recording and even stronger web integration with wireless goodies, Apple manages to attract its media lovers. iPhone is a beautiful and fast phone.

In a funny way, Business users would feel the iPhone as their girlfriend whereas the Blackberry as their wife! What do you guys feel about that……

Mac OS X vs Windows 7 – OS Updates

Microsoft and Apple are fighting for mindshare of the consumers as both companies are roll out to upgrade their operating systems at the end of this year.

Apple showed Worldwide Developers Conference by Snow Leopard on Monday, the next main version of Mac OS-X. Apple has been very open about the fact an under-the-hood maintenance release, focusing on performance enhancements to the OS.

Windows-7 is basically Microsoft’s maintenance release for Vista, which according to many accounts was a failure for the company. “It’s really doesn’t matter the degree of the rewrite in the operating system. “The key is the consumer benefit.”

In early testing of Windows-7 its to bear out improvements in the operating system, Microsoft is coming with a very bad consumer experience with Windows Vista. That is not a minor obstacle for it to overcome.

Microsoft will fight with the industry perception that Windows-7 is just Vista with a few fixes. Which lead to slower adoption of the new operating system out of the gate.

Mac OS-X Leopard was a solid release, filled with features. Overall, Leopard had comparatively few problems throughout its life cycle. Apple on the other hand is coming off one of the most successful operating system launches in the company’s history.

Apple doesn’t have to fight off to negative perception from its users/the industry. Macs have been selling better than ever and there is no sense in slowing down anytime soon.

Apple sells its new OS for $129. That’s a flat fee. Everyone gets the same version that contain all features and enhancements. However, Leopard users will be offered an upgrade to Snow Leopard for $29. Microsoft is releasing its upgrade pricing, but it is expected to be much higher.

“The OS war is on in a big way,” Charging $29 won’t win Apple any converts, but Microsoft is going to look really bad with its upgrade pricing.

It’s obvious that Microsoft has a much bigger channel to push Windows-7 to customers, but we’ve seen with the Vista release that doesn’t always mean success for an operating system.

Apple is coming from a strong position with Mac OS-X Leopard, so its newest Snow Leopard release should be very strong.

Apple’s Snow Leopard is expected to dispatch in September. Microsoft will release Windows-7 in October.

Verizon Sold 1 Million BlackBerry Storms, Compare with iPhone

Verizon has sold 1 million BlackBerry Storm phones since the launching date Nov. 21, spokesperson Brenda Raney told at mocoNews.

Blackberry vs iPhone Sale Comparison

This sale is much quicker than the first Apple iPhone, which took 74 days to sell a million handsets, but nothing in comparison to the iPhone 3G, which sold 1 million in just three days. By the way, it appears that the BlackBerry Storm did quite well even though early reviews found the device buggy.

Notebook V/S Desktop: Gadgets Comparsion

Today’s notebooks are sleek, stylish and eminently portable. They allow your small business to take the company on the road in the space of a carry-on bag. Now, for the first time ever, notebook (laptop) sales have surpassed desktop sales, according to research firm iSuppl.

In the 3rd quarter of 2008, notebook PC shipments rose almost 40% compared with the same period of 2007 to reach 38.6 million units. Conversely, desktop PC shipments declined by 1.3 %for the same period to 38.5 million units.

“Momentum has been building in the notebook market for some time, so it’s not a complete surprise that shipments have surpassed those of desktops,” said iSuppli principal analyst for compute platforms Matthew Wilkins. “However, this marks a major event in the PC market because it marks the start of the age of the notebook.”

While Hewlett-Packard (HP) held onto its lead position in the third quarter of 2008, with shipments of 14.9 million units & a market share of 18.8 %, Taiwan-based Acer was the big winner of the third quarter, which grew its unit shipment market share by 45%, and by 79% on a year-over-year basis.

“Acer shipped almost 3 million more notebooks in the 3rd quarter than it did in the preceding quarter, with the majority of those 3 million being the company’s netbook products,” Wilkins noted. “Clearly, the company’s netbook strategy is paying dividends, with Acer now trailing Dell by less than 2% age points of market share for all PCs.”

iPhone 3G vs Samsung Omnia

Apple iPhone 3G vs Samsung Omnia i900

The Samung i900 Omnia touchscreen phone is a heroic attempt by Samsung. Take a look at the adverts for the handset – as it’s all about the touch. How does it stack up against the iPhone 3G? Read out the comparison & decide which is more worthy:

Look & Feel:
The dimensions of Samsung’s i900 Omnia are very similar to that of the iPhone 3G — 112 x 56.9 x 12.5mm versus 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3mm — and is slightly lighter at 125g versus 133g. With most of the front of the handset given over to the touchscreen, it looks fairly similar to the iPhone, too. There’s a passing resemblance to the LG-KC910, too.

Screen:
Just a third of an inch separates the screen sizes, with the Omnia’s 3.2-inch display being the smaller. Samsung states the screen resolution as WQVGA, which could be 480×272 but is a rather vague description. At that resolution, it doesn’t beat the 480×320 of the iPhone. C’mon Samsung, give us the pixel count.

Camera:
It’s not difficult to trump the iPhone’s camera, and the Omnia does so with a five megapixel camera boasting 4x digital zoom, auto focus, LED flash, various shot modes, photo effects and quality settings. The iPhone 3G, by comparison, is still stuck with a bog standard two megapixel camera without any fancy features.

Multimedia:
The Omnia can play back most music formats including MP3, AAC, WMA and MIDI, can play MPEG4, WMV, DivX, and other format videos, and record video in the MPEG4 format.

The iPhone handles just MP3 and AAC formats, and can play back MPEG4 video. It won’t shoot video out of the box. The Samsung Omnia boasts “3D sound technology”, whatever that is. The iPhone does what a Video iPod does.

Navigation:
The Omnia features A-GPS which can be used for navigation. The iPhone also has A-GPS which links in with Google Maps.

As the software currently stands, the Omnia may be more usable as a dedicated sat-nav system, whereas the iPhone can’t offer automated turn-by-turn directions at present.
Communications

Both phones are 3G-enabled, able to run on the fastest HSDPA networks where available. Both feature Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Operating System:
The Samsung Omnia uses Windows Mobile Professional 6.1. There’s no mention of additional software on top of that.
The iPhone 3G uses a version of OS X.

Storage:
Both the Omnia and the iPhone 3G come with either 8GB or 16GB of user memory, but the Omnia has the advantage of microSD expansion.

Applications:
The Omnia will have access to third-party applications developed for the Windows Mobile operating system, generally without restriction.

The iPhone 3G officially has access to Apple-approved applications from the iTunes App Store. Additional apps can be added to individual iPhones on an ad-hoc basis, and of course the handset can be jailbroken.

Pricing:
Samsung Omnia i900 is priced at Rs. 33,500 while the iPhone 3G (8/16GB) comes at Rs.30,000/35,000

Conclusion:
Samsung’s Omnia handset offers many of the same features as the iPhone, at least superficially. It has similar look and feel, better camera functionality, and wider multimedia support.

However, in the end it still comes down to usability. If you can get on with a Windows Mobile handset, go for it, but I reckon the iPhone’s user interface, built on OS X, still wins by a nudge.

The two hottest music games of the year have hit the shops, and the question on the lips of every wannabe pop star is: which one has the X factor?

The two games — Nintendo’s Wii Music and Guitar Hero World Tour — both promise players the thrill of reproducing well-known songs and allow them to mime along to their favourites: strum a digital guitar or bang a digital drum and the movement and sound will be recreated on the screen by their digital character.

Each game takes a radically different approach. With Guitar Hero World Tour, which is available on most consoles, players use instrument-style props to play along as accurately as possible to various tunes shown on a television screen. Unlike previous editions of the series, in which players could only use a plastic guitar, gamers can now also bash drums or even yell into a microphone.

By contrast, Nintendo’s Wii Music is available solely for the Japanese giant’s home console and requires no fancy props. Instead players use the Wii’s motion-sensitive remotes to mimic the physical movements associated with each on-screen instrument.

The stakes for the winning game are high. Over the past five years, gaming has moved out of the bedroom and into the living room; it is no longer the preserve of spotty teenagers and has instead become a pastime that is fun for all the family. A recent report by Verdict Research, the retail analyst, found that British consumers were on course to spend £4.6 billion on video games and associated hardware in 2008, eclipsing the £4.4 billion predicted to be spent on music and film products.

So which game rocks and which sucks? First up is Wii Music. Here you and up to three friends can play along to various songs using a choice of around 60 virtual instruments. Each “musician” must first attach the two parts of the Wii’s remote motion-sensitive control together to enable two-handed playing. Each instrument works slightly differently: you typically perform actions that loosely replicate those associated with what’s being played. For instance, with hand bells you hold each arm out straight, then pivot your forearms at the elbow. The quicker each hand is moved, the faster the notes are played.

Unlike most other music games, Wii Music doesn’t require you to hit the correct note in sequence at a specific time. Simply pick up the controls and jam away. No matter what tempo you move at, and regardless of the notes that you play, you will always create a passable performance. The real beauty of Wii Music lies in its simple gameplay that encourages everyone to have a go.

The cartoon-style musicians that mimic your movements on screen reinforce the child-friendly atmosphere and the instant musical gratification. Nevertheless, the question remains: if you can’t get it wrong, where is the fun in getting it right?

: Guitar Hero v/s Music

. This is the fourth main instalment in the series — which was launched in 2005 — and can be played using a standard console controller. But the franchise was made famous by its use of a replica guitar prop that enabled each gamer to rock along with the supplied songs shown on screen by pressing colour-coded buttons on the fret board to form notes or chords, which are then played by strumming in time with the music on a bar that represents the strings of an electric guitar.

This latest incarnation of Guitar Hero adds the option of buying enough faux instruments to create a virtual band — for £110 extra. The star of the Guitar Hero show, though, remains the main guitar prop, which is larger than its predecessor and has been redesigned. Equally impressive, however, is its wireless drum controller. This consists of three pressure-sensitive drum pads, two rubberised cymbals, a foot pedal — and two wooden drumsticks.

The game can still be played with guitar alone, yet it really comes to life when you rope in enough friends to form a band. Singers must harmonise to scrolling on-screen lyrics while the other musicians try to hit the correct colour-coded notes in the right sequence as they appear on the TV screen. Timing and co-ordination are crucial, as is a keen sense of rhythm. Accomplished players and rank amateurs can perform in the same band, thanks to adjustable difficulty settings that can be fine-tuned to each individual musician.

Of course for many it is the choice of songs available that will determine which game they buy. And this is where Guitar Hero wins hands down. The title boasts 86 tracks on the disc by artists ranging from the Eagles to Metallica, Michael Jackson and Oasis. Players begin the game with access to a limited number of tracks and can only unlock the full range of tunes by putting in a series of good performances. This provides plenty of incentive to return for one more go. Extra tracks can be downloaded for about £1.40 per song.

By contrast, the Wii has only 50 songs supplied on the disc, and most of these are out-of-copyright nursery rhymes and classical tracks, plus themes from other Nintendo games. There’s also the occasional 1980s pop ditty. Nintendo says it intends to sell extra songs as downloads in future. Both games offer the opportunity to record your own versions of the supplied tracks from scratch and then share these online.

Overall, then, it is Guitar Hero that deserves an encore. The instrument controllers are pricy and bulky, and whether the game confers any real musical skills on the players is debatable. That said, it is unlike anything else on the market, except Rock Band, which also uses instrument props. A new version of this game is due out imminently.

Perhaps most crucially, however — and unlike the Wii — it allows players to believe they are on stage at Glastonbury, in front of a 100,000-strong crowd, belting out that classic rock song — if only for an instant.
