Samsung First DDR4 Memory Module

Samsung has introduced its first DDR4 DRAM memory modules completed development of the industry’s first DDR4 DRAM module last month, using 30 nanometer (nm) class* process technology. The new chips are claimed to offer significant improvements to power efficiency and overall performance, and promise much higher transfer rates at much lower power consumption.

President, memory division, Samsung Electronics Dong Soo Jun,” said, “The new DDR4 DRAM will build even greater confidence in our cutting-edge green memory, particularly when we introduce four-gigabit (Gb) DDR4-based products using next generation process technology for mainstream application.” “Samsung has been actively supporting the IT industry with our green memory initiative by coming up with eco-friendly, innovative memory products providing higher performance and power efficiency every year”

The new modules can reportedly transfer data at the rate of upto 2.133Gbps at a voltage setting of 1.2V. The transfer rate apparently goes all the way up to 3.2Gbps on higher voltages. Compare this to the existing DDR3 and DDR2 modules which can transfer upto 1.6Gbps and 800Mbps at 1.3V or 1.5V settings. Samsung claims these modules will lead to a power consumption reduction of about 40% when compared to the 1.5V DDR3 modules. The module makes use of Pseudo Open Drain (POD), a new technology that has been adapted to high-performance graphic DRAM to allow DDR4 DRAM to consume just half the electric current of DDR3 when reading and writing data.

Samsung has been leading the advancement of DRAM technology ever since it developed the industry’s first DDR DRAM in 1997. In 2001, it introduced the first DDR2 DRAM, and in 2005, announced the first DDR3 DRAM using 80nm-class technology.

Samsung now plans to work closely with a number of server makers to help insure completion of JEDEC standardization of DDR4 technologies in the second half of this year.

Sony released a new water resistant, wearable Walkman “NWZ-250″. This tiny Walkman comes in both 2GB and 4GB capacity models, and apparently boasts an up to 11 hour battery life.

Weighing in at 43 grams and will be available in black, silver, lime green, and magenta. You’ll be able to pick up one (or more) of these later this month for $60. See the snapshot above.

A product of CNK Promotions, this unique pendrive is certainly something I would like to pocket. I swear it would not surprise me in the least to see a news bulletin somewhere where a guy decided to try to suck the beer out of his USB drive. It’d likely start with one guy either daring or offering up some small fund to do it like a dollar. It really wouldn’t take much for someone to do it. Well luckily there are no links to actually purchase this USB drive instead it is just an example of all the cool things a certain company can do with USB drives.

The company can not only fill your USB drive with liquid but add little objects to the mix. Like a car for a racing company. Basically those cheesy pens that the top of them was filled with liquid have now been replaced with these USB drives. Well I suppose it had to happen eventually. Corsair has launched a gadget that claims to be the world’s fastest USB flashdrive. The Flash Voyager GT as it is called is a 128GB high capacity USB flash drive. Flash Voyager GT can read at the top speed of 32Mbps and has the writing speed of upto 25.6Mbps which is almost the speed limit of the USB 2.0 bus. Even with the high data holding capacity the flash drive is 75% smaller than regular flashdrives of less than half the capacity.

The 128GB Voyager GT is nearly twice as fast as other high-capacity flash drives which means less time waiting for your music, video, or office files to copy to and from the drive. The other flashdrives of 128GB capacity available in the market are Kingston’s DataTraveler and DiscGo. The Flash Voyager GT costs Approx Rs 2000. That’s Too much?

Toshiba has announced the launch of the world’s first 64GB SDXC Memory Card gadget accessories with the new SD Memory Standard Ver. 3.00, UHS104. Toshiba also unveiled 32GB and 16GB SDHC Memory Cards compliant with the world’s fastest data transfer rate. Samples of the new SDXC Memory Cards will be available this November and the samples of the new SDHC Memory Cards will be available in December.

The new SDXC and SDHC memory cards bring a new level of ultra-fast read and write speeds to NAND flash based memory cards with a maximum write speed of 35MB per second and a read speed of 60MB per second. The combination of large storage capacities and increased data transfer rates will meet the needs of a wide range of consumer electronics applications such as digital still cameras and digital camcorders that require high bandwidth data communication. With these cards it will be possible to download a 2.4GB video in only 70 seconds.

The SDXC card is the next-generation standard defined by the SD Association in January 2009. The new standard applies to cards with capacities over 32GB and up to 2TB compared to the SDHC standard, which applies to cards with capacities over 2GB and up to 32GB.

Samsung Releases Hummingbird 1GHz CPU for Mobiles

Samsung and Intrinsity jointly launched the Hummingbird CPU which is based on the ARM® Cortex™-A8 processor architecture in 45 nanometer (nm) Low Power (LP), low leakage process technology. It is the fastest processor in the industry for mobiles till yet. The processor is almost twice as powerful as the iPhone 3GS and Samsung OMNIA HD processors. It is also extremely power efficient and utilises a minimum supply voltage of 1V. The processor will unlock new standars of products in both mobiles and others.

We can expect mobile phones with better hardware allowing features such as HD Recording and HD Playback. The Toshiba G1 is also equipped with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and it is known to be quite powerful. We will have to wait and see what this processor can do once it gets implemented in devices.

Here is a list of hit universal remotes in terms of price and performance, released recently. I’ve taken the most popular universal learning remotes in the Indian market – Philips SRU9600, Logitech Harmony One, and Kameleon 8 Universal Remote. I did not look at the Logitech Harmony 1000, or the new 1100 as they are expensive.

I remember when we received the Kameleon One for All remote, it distinctly looked different from the rest. It is a sleek, good-looking device. The body has a brushed aluminum finish with a touch of reflectivity, while the flat front panel sports two rectangular screens and a black bezel.The remote works on 4 AAA batteries. The monochrome screen use electroluminescent technology which means it lights up when you touch it. It’s actually more sensitive than it sounds in fact it lights up on the slightest vibration. The screen supposedly conserves battery life as it only lights up when required. The remote is easy to set up, with an inbuilt database, plus a plethora of codes given in the manual. It has a learning function which is the straight-up method of feeding each key one-on-one with your old remote. One thing I would like to point out is the necessity of reading the manual because successfully operating and setting up the remote is not so easy.

The Philips is a long straight-edged rectangular piece very much like an AV receiver remote control, but of course there is the screen on top– a large one in fact at 3.5 inches diagonally. It’s monochrome but it’s a touchscreen. Philips hardly has any physical buttons on the front panel only a jog wheel with central select buttons. The front panel is glossy but not much other snazziness in the design. The best part of the Philips is that it doesn’t require any CD, installation software or connection to a PC. You just push the setup button on the screen browse the menus, and set up your codes. It has quite a few brands already in the database so even without connecting to the net you could be all set to go. The Philips requires 3 AA batteries and overall is a good choice for anyone who likes keeping things simple without software and stuff.
